Governor Phil Murphy (D) has frequently been asked about the lack of a home grow option in New Jersey’s cannabis program, and he’s expressed openness to the proposal before.This program started in April 2022. Under guidance issued by the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC), medical patients may purchase up to three ounces every 30 days, while recreational consumers can purchase up to one ounce per transaction. The state currently does not allow any home growing, though New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D) has expressed interest in revisiting the criminalizing of home grown marijuana for personal use.
In October 2022, the New Jersey Assembly approved a bill that would allow licensed cannabis businesses to deduct certain expenses on their state tax returns. Currently, the federal government blocks marijuana companies from making any federal deductions under IRS code known as 280E. Neighboring Pennsylvania and New York have taken similar steps to initiate similar pro-cannabis industry tax reforms. New Jersey’s measure heads to the senate for consideration.

Do financial institutions in New Jersey lend money to marijuana businesses?
